“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not corrupt and thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-20
Back when Jeremiah was our only child I had plenty of time to spend plenty of one-on-one time with him when I wasn’t working, he didn’t have to share any of that free time of mine with anyone, but now here we are with 4 kids and I’ve been staying at home for almost 2 years now and time does have to be share A LOT!!
The majority of the day when we have playtime, it’s all of us together which is great, I enjoy it, the kids enjoy it, matter of fact, most of the time you can’t separate them for anything. But, they do need special time just with me one at a time no sharing, just my undivided attention focused on them.
They need this from us every day, even if only for a little bit of time, it really means so much to us. Jeremiah especially loves this time and asks to have this time. The other kids don’t ask for it yet, but I’m sure when they are older they will.
If you are a parent of multiple children, take that time with them each day even if it’s only 15-30 minutes a day your child will love it, that special time can turn a child’s whole attitude around, trust me I’ve seen it!
During this time have no distractions, put away your phone, make sure that your other children are settled in doing something else and are occupied and let them know that you’re having special time with their brother or sister and that their time will be soon. Let your child choose what you do or what you play, that makes it an even more special time with you, do it even if it’s something you really don’t want to do or don’t enjoy, do it because they do and once you see the smiles on their faces you will start to enjoy it too.
Do you get that special time with each time, or is this an aspect of your parenting that you want to change? If you do this already, what benefits do you see your child gaining from this special time with you?
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20
I absolutely love this verse, in fact, right now my husband has this as the signature of his text messages, we both do this, we pick a verse that we love or that has recently spoken something to us, for one so that we can see it but also so when we send a text to someone they either know that scripture or could look it up and get something from it as well, what are some ways you like to use to get God’s word out there?
Are your kids getting cabin fever like mine are, I don’t mind cold weather especially if it snows, but we just can’t get outside as much as we usually do it’s just too cold even though here it doesn’t get nearly as cold as it does some places but to us it’s freezing. But since my kids love the outdoors and we just can’t make it out like we want to I’ll share a few fun things to do during this cold weather.
- Always have play dough on hand or if you don’t have any make some of your own, there are tons of recipes for it everywhere here’s one we like: 1/4 cup salt
1 cup flour
1/4 cup waterLet your child mix the flour and salt in a bowl then add water. Knead the dough to make a clay consistency. You may need to add more water.
You can also add color with food coloring, or use unsweetened Kool-Aid for a nice scent and color, you can even make it sparkle with glitter.
- Obstacle course: Get out their remote control cars and put some large cans or paper towels under the rug and let them jump their cars over it they will be occupied doing this forever! You can also do this with their hotwheel cars but it’s even more fun with the remote control ones.
- Cooking: no matter what the weather my kids love helping in the kitchen, but make sure to let them help out even more during the cold months to give them something to do plus, who doesn’t like an excuse to bake!
- “Washing dishes”: My kids also love to help wash dishes they think it is a game so give them a bin of water and some dishes and let them go to town (this works well in the bathtub too so they can be as messy with it as they want and you don’t have to worry about water getting everywhere)
- Play Stations: Set up different little play stations, spend about 10-20 minutes at each one and then start all over again. Ideas for this would be play dough, painting/coloring, tea party, cars, baby dolls, pretend play/dress up
- Dance: Cut on some music and have a little dance party, who cares how silly you look, the kids will love it and you will have tons of fun too.
- Reading: Do lots and lots of reading all throughout the day snuggle up on the couch and just read to them, get them to read to you or just make up stories together and act the stories out (hot chocolate makes this even better)
These are just a few things you can do during this cold weather, do you have any other ideas? Comment below and share them with me.
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6
I know a lot of people don’t like it when we say we train our children but, that’s what we do, that’s what we are told to do in the bible it’s not a bad thing, it’s not treating them like an animal like a lot of people say. If you ask me, it’s the best thing we can do for our children when we train our children, we not only tell them what to do and not to do, but we show them as well and correct them when they need to be corrected, so hold on to this verse and do as it says.
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
I just wanted to share a nice little tip with you that I’ve just started to do to make our meat go a little farther because with a family of our size and a low food budget, anything to help out is great.
I knew that you could make black bean burgers but I had never tried them, but I thought that if you can make black bean burgers and they taste pretty much like the meat does then why not just add it to meat to make it last longer.
So, I soaked, cooked, and then pureed the beans and added the beans in with my meat before I browned it so far I’ve only used it with deer but I’m excited to see how it tastes with ground turkey as well but I make hash brown casserole, and you could taste the beans a little but it added a nice flavor to the meal and then I did this with enchilada casserole too and it was really, really good.
I love the fact that you can use half the meat you would usually use and get more than double out of it, all while having it taste great and it’s also very healthy.
To do this, I just used half a pound of the meat of your choice and two cups of black bean puree, add the beans before you brown the meat and mix it all together as the meat is being browned and use it just as you would the meat.
Let me know if you try this and how you like it, just comment below!
“Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.” Romans 12:9
I love this verse and I also want to make sure that I follow this in my life starting this new year, I often find myself with idle hands and having times of laziness and I really get upset with myself when I do that not saying that we don’t all need a time to rest and relax because of course we do, but there’s a difference in taking time for ourselves to relax and being lazy. I wanted to post these two different ways because I think that sometimes when we do see the different ways language is used it can even further help us to understand the verses we are reading and I wanted you to get that as well.
New International Version
“She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.” Proverbs 31:27
New Living Translation
“She carefully watches everything in her household and suffers nothing from laziness.” Proverbs 31:27
Now, don’t take this as saying we are going to do this all the time, because we aren’t and that’s because we aren’t perfect, we can’t be perfect, we aren’t God, but we need to strive to be just like Him but if you do have a day or even a week of just being lazy don’t beat up on yourself, just know that because of God’s grace we don’t have to be perfect and He loves us even when we aren’t anything close to it, I just want to encourage you to strive to be more like Him and to make sure not to have idle hands, work hard for the Lord!
“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.” Philippians 4:4
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” Psalms 19:14
“Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” Matthew 6:26
Well, I thought that since I told you what our resolutions/goals were for 2014 I would ask you to join me with one of them. The one I’m asking you to join me in is the one that most people make at the beginning of almost every year which is to lose weight. Well, I have been on a site for almost a year and before you think I’m trying to get you to sign up for something that’s going to cost you, I promise you I’m not, if it cost anything we wouldn’t be on it I can assure you it’s 100% completely free no catches at all whatsoever but anyway, back to what I was saying I’ve been on this site for a while, and it’s a great little community, you can go on there and tack your calories that you eat, track how much you have burned from exercise and also keep up with your weight and measurements if you want to as well and I really love this site, before I got pregnant it really helped me out and I stayed on it all throughout but like I said now that I’m able to get back into focusing on weight loss I can start tracking all my numbers again which I’m super excited again!!
If you would like to join me on this journey the name of the site is myfitnesspal.com and my username is sarahertzberger I would love for you to add me as a friend on there if you do decide to join it, and if you do just add a message with your friend request that says you were sent from this blog so I know who you are.
I’m always up for extra motivation and it’s always great when you have people who support each other it makes the process much more enjoyable for sure!!
If you can’t figure out how to add friends right away, just comment below with your username, and I’ll add you in!
*I do not own any part of myfitnesspal.com just sharing this wonderful site because I love it so much!
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.” Psalms 23:1,2
“Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness because of my enemies; make your way straight before me.” Psalms 5:8
Do any of you make new year’s resolutions? Do you ever actually keep any of them? Well, we usually set goals that we want to accomplish throughout the year and check them off as we go.
This year I know for Justin and I we want to get the extra weight we have off, we’ve been working on this for a while, but for me I couldn’t focus on weight loss like I wanted to since I was pregnant but I did workout all throughout my pregnancy to stay healthy but now that we’ve had our sweet boy I can fully focus on the weight loss and we will continue to do that together.
As a family, I want to get our routine a bit more structured and to spend more time playing together and letting the kids be hands on with us as much as we can for example, they do cook with me some but they love to do it all the time, so I would like to take the extra time to let them cook 2 meals a day with me. Also, to do an art and craft every day together instead of just a couple every week, and more time together outside playing.
Our final goal (or at least for now) is to eat as healthy as we can, I’ve really slacked off from the completely healthy eating in the past month of pregnancy till now, I’ve been buying more boxed meals and things like that, and I don’t want to do that anymore, we felt so much better and had so much more energy when we ate better before so we want to go back to eating that way, not to say we won’t have days where we will still eat some of that but not often at all.
What are your goals or resolutions for this year? Are you going to have any if you haven’t already? Comment below and let me know.
