What We Did With Our Clay!

Well, I showed you our homemade clay post the other day, and if you missed it, you can find it here:  https://resourcefulhomeschoolmom.wordpress.com/2014/04/01/1137/

I also told you I would let you know what we did with ours and we had science class.  We made a VOLCANO!!!!!   I have to admit this one was just as much fun for me as it was for the kids to do.  I really enjoyed doing it and the end result was awesome!

So, for starters get your clay and add some food coloring if you would like.  Just add some red and green now, I will say that I think the color would have turned out a little bit better if we would have mixed the food color in before the clay was mixed all together, but, it still turned out to be good.

What you will need for your volcano:

  • Homemade clay
  • Green and Red food coloring (optional)
  • Small tube or container
  • Outdoor area (it’s very messy do this outside!!)
  • Plate
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda

(The amount of vinegar and baking soda you need depends on the size of your volcano.)

Start out by making a base of clay, and then find something you can use at the end when you add your vinegar and baking soda.  Add your container to the clay and push down so it doesn’t move around.

Next, build up the sides of your volcano, and then build up the base.

Now, it’s time to add in the vinegar, I heated ours up for 1 minute, be careful it will be very hot, also you can add red food coloring to make it look like lava.  Go ahead and pour this into your volcano.

Now you’re ready to take it outside and add your baking soda and watch it explode and it will surprise you how high this thing goes.  I’m not sure if the heated vinegar helped this or not but it seems to have helped.  I really wish I would have brought out my video camera to catch it go but, unfortunately I didn’t and my camera wasn’t fast enough to catch it 😦

Hope you enjoy this!  What fun things do you do for science class?  Comment below and share with us!

Awesome Homemade Gel Paint!!!

I have been trying to do tons of fun arts and crafts with the kids lately, and our latest fun thing to do was when we made Gel paint, this stuff is absolutely amazing and super simple and inexpensive to make so glad I saw this idea!

What you need:

  • Styling/hair gel
  • Food coloring
  • Glitter or sequins

First get a small amount of hair gel

Then, add food coloring, for this amount of gel (about 2- 2 1/2 Tbsp.) 1 to 2 drops is plenty.

After that, add your glitter or sequins, or any other fun things you can think to add

Finally, time to mix it all up, we used popsicle sticks to mix it and they worked really well

And here is your final product, a very fun, neat looking, inexpensive, homemade paint and the best part of all is getting to see the kids having fun and watching them use their imaginations thinking of fun things to paint!
