What We Did With Our Clay!

Well, I showed you our homemade clay post the other day, and if you missed it, you can find it here:  https://resourcefulhomeschoolmom.wordpress.com/2014/04/01/1137/

I also told you I would let you know what we did with ours and we had science class.  We made a VOLCANO!!!!!   I have to admit this one was just as much fun for me as it was for the kids to do.  I really enjoyed doing it and the end result was awesome!

So, for starters get your clay and add some food coloring if you would like.  Just add some red and green now, I will say that I think the color would have turned out a little bit better if we would have mixed the food color in before the clay was mixed all together, but, it still turned out to be good.

What you will need for your volcano:

  • Homemade clay
  • Green and Red food coloring (optional)
  • Small tube or container
  • Outdoor area (it’s very messy do this outside!!)
  • Plate
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda

(The amount of vinegar and baking soda you need depends on the size of your volcano.)

Start out by making a base of clay, and then find something you can use at the end when you add your vinegar and baking soda.  Add your container to the clay and push down so it doesn’t move around.

Next, build up the sides of your volcano, and then build up the base.

Now, it’s time to add in the vinegar, I heated ours up for 1 minute, be careful it will be very hot, also you can add red food coloring to make it look like lava.  Go ahead and pour this into your volcano.

Now you’re ready to take it outside and add your baking soda and watch it explode and it will surprise you how high this thing goes.  I’m not sure if the heated vinegar helped this or not but it seems to have helped.  I really wish I would have brought out my video camera to catch it go but, unfortunately I didn’t and my camera wasn’t fast enough to catch it 😦

Hope you enjoy this!  What fun things do you do for science class?  Comment below and share with us!

Make Your Own

Having a one income family is tough sometimes, I try to do all I can to save us money with pretty much everything, one thing I have tried that I just didn’t like how it turned out was homemade dishwasher tablets.

I was looking forward to making them and seeing how wonderfully they worked I was sure they would be great but, I was disappointed.  They did for the most part leave my dishes clean if I had something that wasn’t soaked immediately it wouldn’t do such a great job on it though, and it’s easy to forget to soak dishes but with these tablets I had to rinse them and make sure there was no food residue at all in order for them to be cleaned but they still didn’t leave the nice shiny look that the store-bought dish tablets give that I love for my dishes to have.

Needless to say, I haven’t been impressed by them and I gave them a good two months to impress me, but knowing that even if I have to spend a little bit more but not have to worry that my dishes are going to come out spotless every time no matter if I soak them or not is just worth it to me.

I’ve been searching around for other one’s that may impress me more but haven’t found anything yet so for now I’ll have to pay more 😦 but, in case any of you would like to try it out for yourself, here’s the recipe I tried out for myself:  2 cups borax, 2 cups washing soda, 1/2 cup epsom salt, and enough lemon juice to make them combine together really well.  Not to wet but not dry enough to crumble.  Use 2 Tablespoons per tablet, I just layed them out on a cookie sheet to dry and then used a recycled container to store them.  Sorry there are no pictures to go with this it completely slipped my mind at the time.

If you do try them let me know if you like how they clean or not.  What other make your own things you would like for me to try out and let you know if they worked or not?  What make your own successes or failures have you had?  Comment below to let me know.
