Love and Marriage

Today I’m going to be talking a bit about marriage. Have you heard about the book the Love Dare? It comes from the movie Fireproof, and if you haven’t seen that one, you should really check it out it’s a wonderful movie! Anyway, back to the book. This book is written by the Kendrick Brothers and it gives you something to do each and every day to strengthen your marriage. My husband and I started the love dare together back in 2011 and we ended up not even getting to finish it but, just the other day I decided that I was going to pull the book back out and do this with him again only this time I’m just doing it myself for him without him knowing just to show him my love.  540_293_resize_20130901_c3baeb9f1aba9bc2d516f1a378a0005f_jpg

You see, my husband and I really do have a great marriage, I have been truly blessed with an incredible wonderful man whom I love with all my heart and we haven’t really ever had any marriage issues (I’m not saying we never get in an argument or don’t annoy each other, that’s just crazy everyone does that) but, we just work right through it and don’t hold onto those things. So, I hadn’t pulled out the love dare book in quite a while because it was almost as if I thought I didn’t need it to improve our marriage. Now, as I said before I decided to get the book out and my thoughts behind that were that it doesn’t matter that we don’t need any extra “help” to make our marriage work, why wouldn’t I want to always be working on making our marriage even better, so that’s what I’m going to do.

Today for me was day 3 of the book and it said to buy something special for your spouse but, today instead of buying something I surprised him and took him out for some frozen yogurt and we had a great time, it really can be something that simple. The first two days were about being kind and being patient with your spouse, sometimes that’s really, really hard but I have been putting my focus on doing these things and it has been so nice and I have really enjoyed showing love to my husband in those ways.

That was some yummy Froyo

What are some ways you go out of your way to show love to your spouse?

Homemade Laundry Soap!

I have thought about making this laundry soap ( you can find the original recipe here ) for such a long time now and just hadn’t made any……. until now!  Today I drug out my big stock pot (yes you will want to bring that one out the soap foams…… a lot) and got the simple 3 ingredients out (well, 4 if you include the water).

First, get your ingredients together:

  • 1/4 cup Borax
  • 1/2 cup Super Washing Soda
  • 1/2 a bar Fels Naptha Soap (this stuff is incredible)

IMG_20150615_192230

First off, let me start by saying that once you start making this your sense of smell will thank you! It smells incredible, your whole house will start to smell so good!!

I always buy a few bars at a time since they are so inexpensive but, I keep them in a cute little jar at the back of my sink and every time I walk by my sink I get to smell that great scent!

I always buy a few bars at a time since they are so inexpensive but, I keep them in a cute little jar at the back of my sink and every time I walk by my sink I get to smell that great scent!

Now, if the ingredients weren’t simple enough the steps to make this are so super easy which is really great for a busy mom like me!

The recipe I use is only half of the original recipe, I make 5 gallons at a time (yes, that little amount makes 5 gallons, crazy right!)

Just grate the 1/2 a bar of Fels Naptha soap (it looks like grated cheese hehe that would be a mean trick to play on someone), add it in a stock pot with 2 cups of HOT water. Heat it over medium low to medium until the soap is completely melted….. this was honestly the hardest part of it all only because it took a little bit of time (about 7 minutes or so) make sure you stir it continuously this is an important step!! This will be the time you either realized you should have used a bigger pot or you’re really glad you pulled out that giant stock pot because this stuff does foam up……….. A LOT!

Now, add HOT water to the 5 gallon bucket, fill it half full and then add in the foamy soap mixture and mix a bit. Then, just add in your borax and washing soda. You do need to mix it thoroughly although to be honest it’s really hard to see anything past the foam so just stir it a bit until you’re pretty sure it’s all mixed in and you’ll be fine.

The last step for today is to just top it off with some more HOT water. I topped mine off and then waited about an hour and added some more once the foam went down a bit to be sure I was getting my full 5 gallons.

I told you it was VERY foamy!!

I told you it was VERY foamy!!

Let this mixture sit all night and it will gel up, now you’re ready to use it just be sure to give it a nice stir before you use it each time!

I love that I finally tried making this it was really simple and now I can save so much money on laundry soap since we go through soooo much in our family and I can choose how I want it to smell, because once this recipe has cooled you can add in your own essential oils. Right now I only have peppermint and eucalyptus on hand so I’ll be adding one of those two to mine but I think that especially during the winter peppermint would be fabulous!!

Have you made this before? How do you like it? Let me know if you try it out now!!

**Disclaimer: I don’t own this recipe! Also, Please make sure to add a tight sealing lid to your 5-gallon bucket we don’t want our little one’s to get into this and get sick or hurt!!!!

Wow, it has been a long time!!!!!

I can’t believe how long it has been since my last post, it’s been over a year! I just got really busy with life and didn’t take out time to write and well, I have just been missing it so I decided to log back in and just pick up where I left off. I probably won’t be posting as frequently as I did before but I do still want to post especially once we start school back up again then I’ll have lots of posts.

Since I’ve been gone our family has done and grown so much. We haven’t added any new members to the family (other than animals which I will post about in the near future) but, Jeremiah is now 6 (he will be 7 next month), Caidence who just had her birthday is now my big 5-year-old (how that even happened I’m not sure, to me she should still be 3), Isabelle is 2 and will be 3 in August, and Ethan is 1 1/2!! CRAZY RIGHT!!!

We have also fully completed 1st grade and Pre-K. We still used My Father’s World curriculum and we absolutely LOVED it, so if you’re looking for a great one I really recommend that one! The kids have just surprised me so much with how much they learned over the past year it really is amazing! I have already started planning for 2nd grade for Jeremiah and Kindergarten for Caidence and can’t wait to get started which will probably be at the end of July! We will still be doing My Father’s World for K and 2nd, and for math we will be using Math-U-See for the first time so I will try to make sure to post a review of that once we have done several lessons using it. For language arts we’re using Language Lessons for today:grade 2 which I’ve never used before as well as Spelling by sound and structure.

Another really great thing is that my business (that I’m able to work in around nap time and a very small amount after bed) has been growing so fast and is really blowing my mind and I am thankfully having so much fun with it and not sacrificing any family time which before I started this never thought that would ever be possible!!

I also wanted to post an update about Ethan and his heart condition (bicuspid aortic valve) he has been doing wonderfully and no one could ever tell he has any issues, he had a checkup at 1-year-old and his heart is functioning wonderfully as is everyone else since they wanted to get all of us checked out as well. Also, he only has to go once every 3 years instead of once a year like they had previously thought which is fantastic!!

So, I hope everything has been going really well for everyone else and can’t wait to get back into posting again and welcome to my new readers, I hope you enjoy!!!

***Comment below and let me know what types of posts do you look forward to reading? I would love to hear your input!

Heaven Is For Real Review!

Heaven is for real

So, with all the talk about the Heaven is for real movie I decided I would read the book by Todd Burpo, and thanks to booklookbloggers.com who gave me a complimentary copy, I’m able to share it with you.  I’ll be honest, after I got it, it took me a while to pick it up and read it, usually when I get a book to read I pick it up right away and just can’t seem to put it back down, but, with this one for some reason with all the thoughts of what if, and could this really be real and whatnot I had some reservations about actually reading it.  Of course I know that Heaven is real, I know that God and Jesus are real, but just the fact that a little boy could have visited Heaven and come back… I wasn’t so sure.

But, finally I went ahead and picked it up, and well I couldn’t put it down, it was such a great book!  Now, I’m not sharing the book to say whether or not I think it did or did not happen, but it is a really good book, and who am I to say that it didn’t really happen.  So, for those of you who may not know all about the book I’ll share a bit with you.

The book starts out telling you about the family on a fun trip and then goes in to explain how they had a quite horrible year with the fathers health going from shattering his leg, to getting kidney stones, and then he ends up getting a lump on his chest diagnosed as hyperplasia.  Shortly after this the issues with Colton-the boy who went to heaven and he ends up having a ruptured appendix.  They go through trials and a very tough time getting a diagnosis and then once they have one, they go through more trials trying to help him recover.  Then, once they are home the tales of what Heaven is like with great detail that aligns perfectly with scripture started being said by this young little boy whom would have had no way of knowing or any way of just imagining these things up.

This was a great book, and if you’re looking for a great book to read that even includes some of scripture then get this one, you won’t regret it.  Now, I just have to go see the movie! 🙂

Just wanted to say sorry for the lack of recent posts, I really didn’t intend to not post, but I’ll be honest, we have been so busy this week.  From dealing with kiddos and my husband not feeling very well to doing the finishing touches on our renovation on the bathroom that has taken up a LOT of our time.  We also just became independent consultants with Rodan and Fields the doctors who created proactiv so getting our part of the business going has taken some time but it’s going great and we’re loving it!

I love that we have decided to join this wonderful team of people, and I can still be at home with my kids…. all the time, and I get to talk to so many great people and share our wonderful line of skincare products with everyone!  I also want to invite all of you who live in the US (sorry we can’t go international yet) to come and check out our website and see what we’re all about!

What We Did With Our Clay!

Well, I showed you our homemade clay post the other day, and if you missed it, you can find it here:  https://resourcefulhomeschoolmom.wordpress.com/2014/04/01/1137/

I also told you I would let you know what we did with ours and we had science class.  We made a VOLCANO!!!!!   I have to admit this one was just as much fun for me as it was for the kids to do.  I really enjoyed doing it and the end result was awesome!

So, for starters get your clay and add some food coloring if you would like.  Just add some red and green now, I will say that I think the color would have turned out a little bit better if we would have mixed the food color in before the clay was mixed all together, but, it still turned out to be good.

What you will need for your volcano:

  • Homemade clay
  • Green and Red food coloring (optional)
  • Small tube or container
  • Outdoor area (it’s very messy do this outside!!)
  • Plate
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda

(The amount of vinegar and baking soda you need depends on the size of your volcano.)

Start out by making a base of clay, and then find something you can use at the end when you add your vinegar and baking soda.  Add your container to the clay and push down so it doesn’t move around.

Next, build up the sides of your volcano, and then build up the base.

Now, it’s time to add in the vinegar, I heated ours up for 1 minute, be careful it will be very hot, also you can add red food coloring to make it look like lava.  Go ahead and pour this into your volcano.

volcano pouring vinegar

Now you’re ready to take it outside and add your baking soda and watch it explode and it will surprise you how high this thing goes.  I’m not sure if the heated vinegar helped this or not but it seems to have helped.  I really wish I would have brought out my video camera to catch it go but, unfortunately I didn’t and my camera wasn’t fast enough to catch it 😦

Hope you enjoy this!  What fun things do you do for science class?  Comment below and share with us!

Stand Firm

” Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.”  Ephesians 6:13

This is an evil world we live in, be prepared, put on your full armor of God and be in His Word so you know how to best stand firm against the enemy.

Christ’s Power

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.  That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

Wonder Women By Kate Harris and Andy Crouch

I recently received this book called “Wonder Women” it’s in a series of books called Frames from the Barna Group, I would like to share a little bit of the book with you.  It’s basically discussing how women get through life.  How they face the challenges they have with being a mother, for some, having a career, and their own identity.  I hadn’t realized that this was basically for the most part research done they had 1000 US women take surveys and share what it is they spend their time doing, as well as how they feel about certain things in their lives.

Now, I must be honest, when I got this book I didn’t realize that it would be done in the form of mostly research so it’s a lot like just reading lots of facts with a small amount of extra reading about how some women’s lives are and how they feel about them and sadly I really didn’t enjoy the book at all.  Usually with books I get stuck in the book and want to finish it all in one day and it’s so hard for me to put it down but with this book, I really had to make myself continue to read it.  I just honestly don’t relate to a lot of the content but, it may be for some of you out there who like reading facts or survey results and things like that.  Maybe it could help you out in your life so I wanted to share it.  The one thing I did like about this book is how it tells you biblical truths, it states that Jesus was born at a specific time for a specific reason as are we along with other facts from the bible which I found interesting.

organization pic  I thought I would share with you all what we do for organization.  Being a homeschool family I am realizing that we’re going to have a lot of stuff that has to be organized so it doesn’t get out of hand….. and we’re only doing Kindergarten so far!

When I started out I just had all of our stuff we needed spread out everywhere and that obviously wasn’t going to work, so I went to the store looking for ideas of how to contain all of this and, here’s what I came up with.

binFirst just pick up a small storage bin, these can be used for just about anything, and I also got some manila folders and add in all of your stuff!

front of bin

top of bin

Our whole Kindergarten curriculum fit in this with many extras, all of our pens, pencils, crayons, and glue fit.  As well as things like clocks, a small dry erase board, extra paper and an extra large notebook.

The manila folders help out with separating our student worksheets, our biblical concept cards, our calendar pages, and all the other learning extras similar to that.

Hope this helps you out with your organization I know it can be tough but these are wonderful, and when you set them up like this everything is nicely stacked and easy to get to everyday.

Cleaning picture for blog

I was cleaning my bathroom yesterday and I really didn’t want to spend forever trying to get the soap scum off of my shower………. again!  It really just builds up without you really noticing, but once it’s there it’s such a pain to get off.

So, here’s what I did,

First off, here are the supplies you’re going to need:

  • Vinegar
  • Dish soap

Yes, that’s all you need.  The page I read said to use blue dawn for this and was very adimant about the fact that it had to be dawn and that it had to be the blue kind, so, I had a few problems, first off, I didn’t have any blue dawn I had pink Ajax.  Second, that was my day to clean the master bathroom and it had to be done, and Third, I was not going to drag myself and all 4 kiddos to the store just to pick up some dish soap.

But, as I said, I had to clean the shower and I wasn’t going to spend forever doing it and here’s what I did:

Take equal amounts dish soap and vinegar (1/2 cup of each was plenty to do my whole shower).  Heat up your vinegar (I heated it in the microwave for 1 1/2 minutes) and yes, you do have to heat it up.  Then, add the mixture to a spray bottle and spray it in your shower and on the doors then just wait.  I let mine sit for a while I just sprayed it on and did the rest of my cleaning and came back to it when I was done.

After you let it sit, take a scrub brush(you could use a sponge too) and give it a light scrub and then just spray the shower down and it’s spotless!  That simple!

I really wish I would have taken some before pictures but I’ll be honest, I didn’t think that it would work at all and that I would just end up scrubbing it as usual but it did so I do have an after picture to share with you guys.

shower after

Trust me, it’s a huge difference from what it was before and I’m so glad that it worked, I will be using this every single week now!

Let me know if you get a chance to try this as well, let me know how great it worked for you as well, just comment below!
